I am a Northern Nevada athlete (tall guy second from left) preparing to represent the United States in the World Masters Track & Field competition held in Gothenburg, Sweden this August. I need your help to get there! I am scheduled to compete in three events – 1,500 meters, 5,000 meters (with two heats – semifinal and final), and 10,000 meters over a period of nearly two weeks.
I think that I have a compelling story. In my first college cross country race 47 years ago, I badly tore ligaments in my right knee and could no longer run without limping. In my late 40s, I managed to “shake” the limp and began to run again just to get in shape and gradually built back up to a competitive level. At the age of 60, I ran a 17:49 5k and thought “well, that was a good race”. I found out just 6 months ago that my time would have placed 2nd in the World Masters Championships! Since then, I’ve been fighting to regain conditioning lost during Covid and have placed first in my age group and in the top 5 overall in my last 6 races. In early July I compete in the Pacific Region Masters Championships (competing in the 800m and 1,500m) and then the U.S. Masters Championships in mid-July where I’ll be competing in the 1,500m and 5,000m).
